Katsuyuki Nishijima is probably the most successful contemporary Japanese printmaker in terms of popularity and numbers of prints sold. His woodblock prints show romantic town and landscape views. They are inexpensive and popular in and outside of Japan. Katsuyuki Nishijima is in the footsteps of the old ukiyo-e tradition that created woodblock prints that were affordable and sought after by the common people.

Kamigata is the name of the region around Osaka in Japan. And kamigata-e are woodblock prints made in Osaka during the 19th century. The Osaka printmakers specialized in actor portraits and scenes from the popular kabuki theater. Compared to woodblock prints made in Edo city (Tokyo), the Osaka prints look a bit odd. And this is what makes them so charming for collectors. Another advantage: Kamigata-e are inexpensive.
